#AskElle: Carpets: Think Colour & Layers

The layered rug look is definitely a hot design trend this season!

Most wall-to-wall carpets are a neutral colour, so this is your opportunity to bring in colour and your personality. Layering rugs will define your space. When choosing area rugs, find colours, textures and patterns that compliment one another to make your room pop. Using a couple smaller rugs that coordinate with each other will add more lushness and bring in that cozy feel.

There are many styles of rugs but a general rule of thumb is…if your furnishings, accessories and artwork are colourful than choose solid colours for the floor coverings. And the opposite is true, if your furniture pieces are neutrals and solids, then have fun with traditional or contemporary patterned rugs or whatever your style preference.

To master the layered rug look, here are five tips to help you get in touch with your inner decorator:

Colour
The layered rug look is best when you mix similar colours. You want a harmonious look that flows together and that does not compete with the rest of your decor. With a neutral wall-to wall colour, don’t be afraid to play with bolder, colourful and patterned rugs. It will define your space.

Texture
As with decorating in general, mixing textures will add depth and dimension to your space. Different piles, different prints, along with brighter colours will bring that finished look to your room. Here is some inspiration!

Size
When decorating a room, remember that balancing proportions is important. You don’t want a tiny rug on top of your wall-to-wall carpet. Consider layering two rugs on top. Have one that covers three quarters of the base rug, then have a smaller rug for the top layer. A budget friendly tip is to have a less expensive rug on the second layer, and a more expensive smaller rug on the top, for that ooh la la look.

Pattern
As in fashion, don’t be afraid to mix patterns. Mixing florals and stripes that have matching and coordinating colour schemes will add a fun and unique look to your space.

Shape
Rugs are often used to highlight or define a space, and is a key element in adding flair, sophistication, and in creating a warm and intimate space. Think outside the ‘rectangle’ – do not forget oval, round, hexagonal and octagonal. Rugs that are different shapes are a great way to create a conversation area.

Outdoor Living
Do not forget outside too! Depending on your backyard furniture arrangement or balcony bistro set, if you have solid colour furniture, you may like to choose a colourfully designed area rug. But of you want to show off a view or foliage then complementary solid or natural colours would work best.
