#AskElle: Decorate Without Breaking Your Budget

As an Interior Decorator, Stylist + Stager, I get asked lots of questions on how to decorate with style and comfort and without busting the budget or taking out a second mortgage.

Upsizing, downsizing, condo to townhouse, townhouse to house, or staying put, decorating and sticking to your budget sounds like an oxymoron. If you are a first-time home buyer, you have probably already stretched your budget. Do not get discouraged. You do not have to compromise style and comfort. It can be done and here are some ways to decorate and refresh your home on a budget:

Beautiful Simplicity by Ellement Re:Design

One of the easiest ways to decorate or refresh a space is with paint. You can give a space a whole new look very inexpensively. A gallon of paint costs approximately $35-45 and one to three cans is enough to paint a room.

Of course, this might sound obvious, but shop around for sales, bargains, clearance and closing out sales. When shopping for clients, I have found great home décor items at 50-75 per cent off when browsing the sale areas. Lots of treasures can now be found online and at budget friendly furniture stores in Vancouver. You might not find everything right away and at one store, so patience is needed. But at the end, you can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars.

Other Décor Places to Shop
Did you know Amazon sells furniture and décor accessories? Also, next time you go to Costco for your groceries, do not forget to look in the furniture area. You can find some great pieces such as bar stools, love seats and chairs. Twice a year in January and July, they have a clearance sale, even bigger deals to be had!

Outdoor Decorating
Do not forget your outdoor space as well. You can spend six months or more living outdoors, make it a beautiful and relaxing oasis without breaking the budget.

My Decorating Philosophy
My philosophy about decorating when on a tight budget is all about rearranging what you already have, as well as at times buying new. Rearranging objects and treasures that you already have can give a different flair. Do not be afraid of rearranging and putting different items together in different rooms to give new life to pieces you already have.

It takes time to decorate a new home, but at the end, if you are patient and take the time to get those deals, it will be all worth the time and effort. Enjoy the process of decorating and making your space a warm and inviting home to enjoy with friends and family.
