The producers of Concord’s NYE Vancouver celebration have teamed up with Vancouver-based ridesharing app Flok. The iOS mobile platform provides an alternative transportation option to attendees who wish to bypass city transit, cabs or personal vehicles. It connects driving attendees with extra seats in their cars with passengers who need a lift.
The site of the NYE celebrations has limited parking available for the estimated 100,000 revelers attending the family-friendly event. Flok hopes to reduce the number of parking spaces required for those who are travelling to the venue by car.
“New Year’s Eve in Vancouver is one of the busiest nights of the year for both cab companies and public transit. SkyTrain lineups quickly become incredibly long, and it’s not uncommon to wait over an hour for a cab,” said Clio de la Llave, Co-founder and CEO. “Some people decide to skip the fuss and drive themselves. We’re asking those drivers to offer their extra seats to others en route to the same party – reducing wait times and traffic for everyone in the city.”
Drivers attending Concord’s NYE Vancouver who have extra seats in their car can post their ride on the Flok app, including their departure and destination locations, time of departure, requested financial contribution, and all other details. Unlike with ridesharing giant Uber, Flok drivers do not make a profit beyond the cost of travel, but can share gas, toll, and parking fees with their passengers. The app also includes user profiles, rating systems, in-app messaging, and automatic payments to create a secure and social experience for users.
“Ridesharing is a newer concept for some Vancouverites, but we’re hoping that people become open to adopting an economical and socially responsible form of transport,” said Nadine Robinson, Co-founder and COO. “The Lower Mainland is filled with environmentally-conscious residents, most of whom are affected by the increasingly high cost of living. Flok addresses both concerns by providing a way to share your travel expenses and reduce your environmental impact.”
Those interested in participating in the rideshare initiative can download the free app in the iTunes store and look for the “NYE Vancouver” community on the application’s home feed.
