Year in Review: CrueltyFree Beauty 2016

Creating and maintaining a crueltyfree beauty regimen gets easier every year. 2016 is the year of no more excuses as the availability of vegan products, both locally made and distributed by world renowned luxury brands, has hit an historical high. From the convenient London Drugs beauty counter to shopping mecca Sephora, everyone now has a wide selection to choose from.

With our ecofriendly mandate, BLUSH has been privileged to receive and try so many of these wonderful products, and we want to share our favourites.

United and Free  Lo-Foam Shampoo & Hydrofy Conditioner

Lo-Foam Shampoo: Like all the United and Free products, this gentle shampoo is gender neutral and locally created. Designed to cleanse and balance hair, it is pH balanced and contains baobab protein to help strengthen hair and restore elasticity. With the Winter season being so drying, its gentleness is welcoming. It is lightly scented with rosemary and peppermint essential oils, black spruce, and the resulting scent is outdoorsy and fresh.

Hydrofy Conditioner: This lightweight conditioner detangles and conditions with a highly-effective combination of natural ingredients. Also containing the baobab protein, Hydrofy restores strength, elasticity and shine, and is great at conditioning dyed hair. Love the blend of essential oils – rosemary, peppermint, black spruce, bergamot, and clary sage – which leave a light scent and no perfume residue.

ERA Ageless Powerful Deep Wrinkle Filler

The Powerful Deep Wrinkle Filler is the only product I purchased in 2016. On Black Friday, I was in the Calgary International airport and chanced upon a kiosk offering complimentary product demos. The sales associate was persuasive and I decided to have a seat while my partner stood in line at Starbucks. A few pumps were applied to my right side smile line and around the eye. I did have a moment of panic when my partner approached with a soy cappuccino and exclaimed ‘What have you done to your face?!’ He proceeded to pull out his cell phone, take my picture, and wave it in my face. The right side of my face had tightened and the wrinkles were almost gone while the left looked slack in comparison. That was all I needed to make the purchase! The results are visually similar to Botox and for now, I am off the needle. The ERA wrinkle fillers get precisely into facial lines, targeting and tightening the skin and the underlying tissues at the heart of the wrinkle, and plumping the furrow to create soft, smooth looking skin. This product is so effective I use one pump per week and and the results last.

Di Morelli Skin Care Moisturizer

Di Morelli Moisturizer is formulated for superior moisturizing power and long lasting hydration. Paraben-free, oil-free and non-comedogenic, it penetrates the skin quickly, leaving no residue. Composed of non-animal based ingredients, it binds moisture to the skin and keeps all skin types feeling silky soft. The line was created by local Vancouver physician Dr. R.W. Morrell for in-house skin care treatments on his patients at the Medical Rejuvenation Centre, which specializes in non-surgical medical aesthetics. Given the erratic weather we have been enduring this month, an amazing moisturizer is needed.

La Biosthetique Formule Laque

This cosmetic hairspray fixes the hair and gives it a strong, flexible hold and volume on all lengths of hair. Formule Laque is neither drying nor sticky and can be completely brushed out as needed for reworking your style. I find this spray conditioning, incredibly soft and non-irritating. The glossing agents gives the hairspray a beautiful shimmer which lasts all day long and the compact size makes it easy to carry when heading out.

For those who think that a quick visit to the dermatologist will provide results quicker, we consulted with Dr. Allison Sutton of Sutton Cosmetic with regards to last minute touch-up’s for the holidays.

Dr. Sutton has a Medical, Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatology practice on West 8th. She advises us that Botox is best administered 2 weeks before an event. While it often starts to work a few days after the injections, it can take up to two weeks for the full effect. Restylane and other fillers look great right away but there can be swelling and bruising from the injections, so it is best to do them at least two weeks before a big event. Make sure you plan accordingly and see your Dermatologist with plenty of time to spare before the holidays or a big event.

Hydrafirm Eye Brightening Repair Creme by ZO
This amazing eye cream reduces puffiness, dark circles and fine lines around the sensitive eyelid skin. It’s one of our favorite products. Use it twice a day as part of your skin care routine.

ZO Peels
Peels are the perfect way to polish your skin before a holiday party. These are customized based on your unique skin concerns to deliver effective ingredients for acne, rosacea or to brighten the skin. They do a beautiful exfoliation leaving your skin glowing and radiant in time for any holiday party. These can be done a few days before or the day of a big event.

I am looking forward to 2017 and trying and sharing new cruelty-free beauty products!
