When was the last time you changed your mascara? Pressed powder or the makeup bag itself? I have seen many a well put together fashionista with her coveted Celine handbag containing product that that is well past its due date!
As a professional makeup artist, I pay more attention to these things but whether you are a pro or someone who only wears the basics, it is important to know how often you should be replacing your products and the bag as well.
If you ask a women what makeup essentials she carries in her purse, chances are the list that includes lip products, a powder to touch up and/or remove shine, bronzer, mascara, blush, eyebrow pencil or powder and a blush or powder brush. Of course my list is a lot longer!
The other day one of my best friends told me she needed new mascara because she hadn’t bought one in a year. I cringed and immediately asked her to hand over her makeup bag so I could examine the contents. Inside was a year old mascara, pressed powder that definitely looked a few shades darker than its original colour and a powder puff that had of oil buildup on it. When a product such as a pressed powder has moisture (residual oil from your skin) introduced to it, it begins to absorb the oil and altering the colour, reducing the amount of powder that your puff can pick up and you actually end up placing more oil on to your face!
My advice is to replace your powder puff or sponge regularly, at least once a month. Laura Mercier has a Matte Pressed Translucent Powder ($42) that is perfect for touch-ups without adding build up to the skin. Mascara should be changed monthly and kept for no more than 3 months. Not only does the mascara begin to dry out but a mascara tube is the perfect environment for bacteria to grow so it is very important to change mascara often.
My mascara favorites are Legendary Lashes – Charlotte Tilbury ($38), Diorshow ($36) each are amazing in providing layerable drama.
When it comes to lip products that have been open for over a year, check the colour, has it changed? How has the scent of the product changed? If you notice any changes it is best to replace your lipstick or lip-gloss. When that happens fall in love with these beautiful natural colours for every skin tone. Bitch Perfect -Charlotte Tilbury ($38) or Indian Rose-Tom Ford ($63).
What about your brushes? Brushes perform at the very best when they are clean. Once a week is sufficient. Clean brushes will pick up the intended amount of product and contribute to your desired result. Carry the Bobbi Brown blush brush ($66) and keep it clean with the Beauty Blender cleaner ($22).
Last, but not least, is the makeup bag itself. I have included some options that will look really cute when brought out for touch-ups. In fact, even if you do not want to carry a purse, these bags look really great coordinated with your outfit as a stylish clutch!
Keep protecting that summer skin, makeover those long overdue makeup bags and stay tuned for next month’s fall bridal makeup trends.
