There are those of us who get up each morning and say ‘today I am going to make change’, even if it may be considered inconsequential to some who have different goals in life. I wake up each morning, and find myself truly in love with my career in the beauty industry and every day is amazing to watch the transformations, that I, and those around me, create on clients who come to the beauty counter. Whatever their reasons, as simple as a little pick-me-up or a woman who has made a decision that today are ready to move on to a new life – I am grateful to be there at that moment.
Whether you have oily, dry or combination skin, choosing the right product for the summer months is tough for everyone. Rising temperatures, sunscreens, environmental pollutants, and of course, makeup, can all contribute to the access build-up of oil on your skin.
All of these factors combined with the day-to-day grind and well…one could fry food on their forehead. With 15+ years as a make-up artist in the industry with top brands (MAC, NARS), and currently I am at the downtown Vancouver Holt Renfrew as a Cosmetics Sales Manager. I can honestly say, through my career I have tried just about every product out there and am fortunate enough to have tried the very best that the industry has to offer. Believe me, there has been a lot of trial and error along the way, those pictures we will not share! So whether it is your wedding day, a work day or an evening out, I want to share with you a beauty regime, and products, that will work to keep away the dreaded ‘summer oily skin’.
Being familiar with your personal routine to cleanse, tone, serum and moisturize is important and it is how we start our day. Then, of course comes the sunscreen, and if you are feeling really brave – foundation and concealer is added. A few hours later the shine starts to creep up on the forehead and by mid afternoon the overwhelming feeling to repeat all of the steps above and reapply comes over you. Unfortunately there isn’t always a sink nearby and even if there was we probably aren’t carrying our entire bathroom of products around with us. So what do we do? We still want to look as polished and perfect as those Kardashian sisters but without the team of experts and with far fewer steps. Understand that it all starts with the correct products to achieve healthy skin and keep excess oil production to a minimum.
Recommended Summer Skin Kit
The best cleanser I have tried is Amore Pacific Cleansing foam ($60). A pea sized amount goes along way and not only does it remove all makeup but it also leaves the skin feeling clean without being stripped. Often times we cleanse, and then have that tight feeling afterwards. That feeling actually is not a good thing and signals our skin to produce more oil to compensate and this is definitely not what we want! This cleanser also has little antibacterial beads that help reduce breakouts. Now that I am a 35 year old woman, I find myself have more breakouts than I did as a teenager, so this is a bonus.
Proceed with an application of La Prairie Cellular Refining Lotion ($130) to your favourite cotton pad. This toner leaves the skin feeling refreshed and helps to remove any access makeup and prep the skin for the next step – sunscreen.
Who does not love hanging on a sunny patio on a hot afternoon with a frosty beverage and great company? My drink of choice is Bellini with lots of crushed ice and while enjoying, I do not want to be worrying about my skin. Sunscreen is the most important step to the skincare routine. It does not matter what product we use and what the product functions are, if we are not protecting our skin from the sun, we are doing damage.
Chantecaille makes a sunscreen and primer in one named the Anti-Glycation Primer ($118) that has an SPF 45 and is a primer and sun protection in one. I am all about simplifying my routine.
After the primer and sun protection apply the Tom Ford Illuminating Primer ($82). Yes, this is a primer as well, but do not worry because it is super lightweight and the best part is that it leaves a soft focus dewy glow on the skin.
Carry the Juice Beauty Hydrating mist ($28) and spritz your skin at leisure throughout the day as a makeup refresher or a cooling mist.
Summer months come and go quickly, so get out there and enjoy the sun. Just make sure you are armed with these must have products. Enjoy all the Yaletown patio’s, summer backyard barbecues and beach dates you want – just be prepared.
All the best and come back next month and we will discuss summer make-up bag make-over‘s to keep your product fresh and your skin healthy.
