EcoFriendly & Fashionable in 2017

One thing Vancouver has been criticized for time and time again is our fashion sense, or lack there of. Maybe it is hometown pride or our laid back, west coast attitude but we seem to take the simplest routes. Clothing is a requirement and we meet that with a fraction of the intention of our east coast counterparts. When Lululemon first hit the scene we were hard pressed to find a woman not walking around in stretchy yoga wear and now Aritzia seems to have taken over the majority of our day to day wardrobes.

But I am not complaining, I love Aritzia just as much as the next girl but I have to admit it’s an easy go-to… and not just for me. Raise your hand if you’ve showed up to the same meeting or event in the exact same outfit or you and your best friend basically have the same wardrobe.

With the start of the new year in full swing, it is time for a new you! I am changing my go-to outfits by sourcing unique, vintage pieces from My Sister’s Closet and Mine and Yours. While I love looking for vintage pieces pretty much anywhere I find some places a bit too overwhelming. These local fashion houses are great choices because they have curated their collections and really speak to my sense of style. Everything looks pulled together and are the basis of a well-thought out look. While I do not often find the vintage clothing of my dreams at Value Village, I do find fabulous jewelry items that really add a unique style to my outfit! In addition to finding one-of-a-kind pieces you are guaranteed not to share with a co-worker and the price point allows you to buy multiples.

When I am looking to dress a piece up or dress it down Nicole Bridger is my one-stop-shop. Nicole Bridger is one of my favourite Canadian fashion designers because she makes pieces for women who want to look effortlessly chic while maintaining a commitment to the earth and its people. I like to wear this chunky grey sweater over their knee length dress, dress it up with their blazer or dress it down with a soft pair of jeans making this sweater versatile, timely and a staple in my wardrobe.

When I think of ecofriendly I think bamboo and there are a couple brands that I just cannot live without. Sugar Plum Sisters has one of my all-time favourite nighties that’s breathable, luxurious and makes the perfect gift anytime for busy moms or the girl boss in your life.

You can never have enough sleepwear. The best part is it’s 95% bamboo and extremely ecofriendly. I have friends who have worn the tee out on the town, hiding it under a warm parka…. It is THAT cozy.

Another line of clothing made with bamboo is tasc Performance Activewear, comfortable, soft activewear that also performs and doesn’t irritate the skin. They have a wide selection of activewear for men and women. One of the best parts of this brand is that ninety percent of the energy used in making tasc Performance garments is renewable energy, with much of it provided by solar panels installed at their factory in India. I admire the fact that they work closely with their factory team in India to ensure the highest quality in every garment and ensure that business best practices are upheld for everyone who helps create tasc Performance fabrics and apparel. You can feel good about the clothing that you choose to live in.

Another item that I cannot forget is the brand new premier luxury vegan unisex bag from Ministry of Tomorrow that will boost your ecofriendly game in 2017 because this is a conscious revolution. An awakening and elevation of the spirit and people that are open their minds to other possibilities all over the planet. Their bags represent this mindset. Not only do they use the highest quality organic cotton, vegan leathers and low impact dyes, the story of how their bags directly affect those who hand make them in their factory in Kenya is powerful. The bags are a true representation of how we can look good and feel good while helping to empower people, stand up for animals and protect the planet.

As my reader I’m offering you $100.00 off the purchase of your next bag with Ministry of Tomorrow using the coupon code: MOTXLANGSTON

While you’re hitting the shops for your next wardrobe additions, check out a few vintage or thrift shops. It’s a great way to refresh your wardrobe and it 100% counts as recycling so you can and should feel great about all of your vintage finds!
