Earlier this month Opera Mariposa presented an encore of the hit European opera gala, Go For Opera! in Vancouver. Kicking off a collaboration between European and Canadian singers, that will culminate in a full-scale opera production of Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera this November.
The event saw Frankfurt-based sopranos Heidi Muendel and Nancy Hasiuk team up with Metropolitan Opera Award-winning soprano Robin Hahn, co-founder of Vancouver’s Opera Mariposa, as well as some of the Lower Mainland’s most exciting young artists, including tenor and Vancouver Opera favourite Mark Pepe; acclaimed baritone William Liu; multi-award-winning dramatic mezzo-soprano Melissa Ratcliff; and CTC Award-nominated pianist Angus Kellett.
Opera is often seen as an exclusive and sometimes intimidating world to break into, this event was a fantastic example of breaking down those walls. The event felt light-hearted and intimate. Hahn, who hosted the evening was charming and warm, making time to talk to many of the attendees. The performances themselves had attendees audibly wowed by the stunning quality of tone and range shown by the performers. It was also a chance to sample a little of what the fall production will have in store, with an exclusive preview performance of highlights from Un Ballo in Maschera itself.
For Un Ballo in Maschera Opera Mariposa will be joining forces with the Heroic Opera Company, for an all-new production of the operatic masterpiece. Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera, or A Masked Ball, is a story of a secret love triangle and a political conspiracy both come to a head on a single night at a masquerade. This tale of passion, deception, and intrigue features a huge, lush score and arguably some of the best dramatic music ever written, so you will not want to miss your chance to see it brought to life by a stellar cast from across North America, Europe and Asia!
