Etsy Trend Event: What’s Hand-made this Summer?

Online sweetheart, Etsy,  brought their Merchandising Specialist Emily Bidwell to Vancouver to share a taste of what is up and coming this summer season in a private event this past week.

For those who are not in the know, Etsy is a peer-to-peer e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items and supplies, as well as unique factory-manufactured items. This means that not only can they predict the latest trends, but they are able to guide us to local artisanal stores and designers that have awesome and unique products right on our doorstep.

An Etsy tableau – before the guests arrived!

So, what are the key trends and items to look out for? Well, fortunately for Etsy and their sellers, Bidwell says hand-crafted pieces and vintage items are very popular right now with many people wanting unique, one-off pieces. Nature is also a huge influencer this season from colour palette to texture and can be seen in most of the big trends.

Colour is always a great way to bring in a trend whilst sticking to your own style. This season, Etsy predicts that blues are going to be big, and that weather-worn shades and denims will be particularly popular, as well as muted pastel shades, stone colours, and hints of metallics.

Continuing the themes of nature and one-of-a-kind/handmade products,we will see these reflected when it comes to materials and finishes. For example, products that have a hand-hewn look or handcrafted detail are proving popular. Heavy grained wood, clay, linens and base metals are all examples of on-trend materials this season. Patterns and prints are also a great way to bring in the nature trend, and we will see floral and foliage prints in both fashion and homewares.

After the guest arrived – excited chaos!

Every season we can expect to take a little influence from a bygone era, and this season it is the 90’s. A huge accessory trend we are seeing is the choker.

This is looking to be the must-have accessory for the summer. Another accessory the team at Etsy, which allows you to bring in a little fun as well as add some ‘flare’ to your outfit is another 90’s throwback, the wedge sandal shoes, with extra points if they’re jellies.
