The last couple weeks have been complete madness for me and trying to stay fit and healthy in the process has been HARD!
Between heading down to Seattle for Eco Fashion Week Press Tour, flying to Calgary with Buick Canada and then heading up to Whistler to cover Cornucopia, food and drink festival, so you know how that might go, my days have been jam packed with little to no sleep. So I am left feeling super dehydrated, stressed out and tired. Not to mention I have a wicked sprain where I have torn the ligaments on both sides of my ankle and it’s driving me nuts!
The only way I keep my sanity and have enough energy to keep up with my schedule is doing a few little things throughout my day, as well as planning ahead, so I can take on everything that is thrown at me. For instance, today I am covering the new Equinox fitness club. It is out of control by the way. I cannot wait to share more with you on that, but as I was saying, here are some of my tips to stay on top of your health game when you are on the road.
Eat something green – Green means alkalizing.
Every time you consume something green, whether it be a salad, juice, or smoothie, you are promoting balance in the body and investing in your future self. So go for the green such as kale, spinach or even an apple if you’re in a rush.
Eat something raw – Eat alive and you will feel alive. Have at least one raw food per day. I try to order or pack a bag of baby carrots or a banana with me wherever I go.
Eat something fermented or take a probiotic. Proper digestion is the foundation of great health and glowing skin. It’s all about good bacteria. I always pack a good probiotic with me whenever I travel.
Eat good fats. Healthy fats are fuel for the brain and body. Add some coconut oil to a smoothie or eat half an avocado. I try to find an avocado on the road. Makes a great snack and stays with you for a long time too.
Kombucha – If I am out late emceeing or up early shooting my go-to drink is GT’s Kombucha. A drink that tastes as awesome as it makes you feel. All the flavours are excellent however my favourite is the original. Kombucha is very beneficial as it provides good bacteria in your gut as well as a low-sugar alternative to soda. So feel the fizz, it is bubbly and awesome.
Protein. I cannot stress enough how important protein is. Your body uses protein to build and repair tissues. You also use protein to make enzymes, hormones and other body chemicals. Protein is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. I start my day with a high-protein shake instead of a coffee. I also take a Zen Theanine when I really need to focus and need that cup of coffee feeling instead of the jitters. Here is a recipe to one of my all-time favourite protein shakes from Body Energy Club. I could seriously drink this everyday. Whoops I sometimes do ;).
Natalie’s Fave Protein Shake
- Almond Butter
- Almond Milk
- Vegan Protein Powder
Blend until smooth. Add more almond milk if needed for desired consistency.
Tip: If I am in town I typically like to make a large batch on Sunday night. I pour into 5 jars to freeze for the week. This makes for an easy drink to grab and go. Just triple the recipe.
I find balance in breathing, mediation and yoga. It can be anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, really whatever you have time for. As long as I take even 5 minutes, I feel more centred, more able to take on daily stressors and I have that little extra patience that always comes in handy.
Give yourself some love.
At the end of a busy day instead of that extra glass of wine, I choose to head to my hotel room for a moment of rest with a bath and medicinal oils. I feel more centred and able to manage all of the stressors that come at me the next day. Diffuse some essential oils before bed and create a daily health ritual with adaptogens from Nectar Juicery.
And if I just cannot find that sense of calm that I so need, especially if I am about to get on stage or speak in front of a crowd, I have something that I call magic in a bottle. Living Libations Rose Otto Oil. I rub this all over my shoulders and on my wrists and it immediately puts my mind at ease, calming my whole being. This romantic oil encourages trust, helps heal body and mind, lifts depression and helps ease the pain of heartbreak as well.
The first day I am back in town, which is exactly what I just did, I book an appointment at the IV Wellness Boutique. IV therapy is a fast and effective means of administering high doses of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and amino acids into the body to support deficiencies, stimulate healing, promote weight loss, help defy aging, improve energy, boost the immune system and so much more. The IV Wellness Boutique offers a wide range of IV therapies from short IV pushes to longer, more vitamin-packed IV drips. The women are fantastic and they customize a treatment to whatever my body needs. I treat this as a reset for my system and always sleep like a baby afterwards.
The next time you’re travelling or find yourself getting overwhelmed with a busy schedule, especially with the holidays coming up, keep in mind some of these tips and you will feel better in no time.
Gotta run! Until next time…
