This week we are shining the spotlight on Tribe member Nicole Fong. Choosing a healthy active lifestyle is one of the most rewarding thing you can do for your mind, body, and spirit. However, for many women at the beginning of their journey to a healthy lifestyle, finding the joy in it can be challenging. When Nicole joined the Tribe last November it was immediately evident that her cheerful, infectious attitude was a perfect fit.
Nicole’s words on transforming in mind, body, and spirit:
One day you decided to make a change. What sparked this?
I had always wanted to find a personal trainer to enhance my fitness level and achieve weight loss goals, but I was extremely intimidated by the idea. There are a lot of misconceptions about strength training, like how you will get muscular disproportionally and look manly. Joyce Tee, another client of Maria’s and my friend from dodgeball, had been getting in much better shape and recommended that I go see her!
How did you use to feel before?
Overall, I felt I was very tired all the time even though I was getting my eight hours of sleep. I would feel bloated and sluggish throughout the day as well.
How do you feel about yourself now?
I have never felt better since I started training with Maria. The very first change that I noticed was my outlook on life. Training with Maria is not only about weight loss anymore. She taught me that there is much more to life than just materialistic things or superficial looks. Thinking about and investing in health is a form of self-fulfillment as well. We get so caught up in life situations that we forget about prioritizing ourselves.
I also learned that change takes time, but it is POSSIBLE. The most amazing thing was how the exercises I NEVER thought I would be able to do—I did them! My overall strength has increased, and my posture is improving tenfold. Honestly, I am very happy with the way my body has changed over the last few months, and I am looking to improve even more.
How important is a positive attitude to reaching your goals?
Attitude is key in reaching your goals in life. I always focus on the solution and how I can improve. Many of us get stuck trying to figure out who and what caused things to happen. Everything happens for a reason. Don’t EVER let that stop you from doing the things you LOVE or ENJOY! Don’t get caught up in a wind storm of emotions, that’s the worst. Always think that you can do it. If you can’t do it today, you will be able to in a week or month. Never give up and don’t beat yourself down. Another important key to success is being grateful for what you have. I am grateful that I have a strong tribe family that makes those gruesome workouts bearable and fun!
What healthy tweaks have you made to your daily routine?
My daily routine is simple. Breakfast is coffee with milk and no sugar, and a sprouted grain bread and tuna/salmon/egg salad sandwich. Use avocado instead of mayo. Lunch and dinner are always homemade. I incorporate one week of eating only veggies every month. This may seem difficult, but once you give it a go, it’s actually not hard at all. Your body will adapt to it soon enough.
I decided to cut out refined sugar as well, and the results are amazing. A much clearer mind, and energy level is superb. Swapped all my processed white carbs to sprouted grain and multigrain. Eating much smaller portions and not gorging myself every meal—I’m usually only 80% full most of the time.
What plans do you have for the future?
Keep going at it with the workouts and sweat bullets every time. Always keep improving and don’t stop! This is a pretty unique tribe family that we have here. I have made friends for life.
What advice do you have for workout newbies?
Meal prep to the MAX! It keeps you on your toes, AND you save $$$$. You know exactly what you are putting in. It may take a while to get used to, that’s what my Sundays are all about. We also take progress measurements. The numbers may not turn out as expected, but that should NOT be a reason to stop. Nothing comes easy, and whenever you encounter an obstacle, you just have to go full force and challenge it. It will make you a stronger person!
