#FitnessOnTheRun: Surviving the Festival Circuit

With the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) wrapping up last week, Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) starting next week, and the 12 week countdown to the Whistler Film Festival (WFF) already ticking, all eyes are on which films are the most buzz-worthy Oscar contenders.

The Sunday night Emmy’s is a reminder that red carpet season is quickly approaching. Living fit and healthy on the run can be challenging especially around award season. My schedule can get a little nuts covering TIFF, VIFF then WFF, throw in a couple fashion weeks, along with Cornucopia and I am booked solid every night with red carpets, events, screenings, interviews and parties. Now don’t get me wrong, it can be so much fun but at the same time it is also very draining. You can imagine all the extravagant eating and drinking that can take a toll, especially if you are trying to look good in photos and keep up your energy. There are little things that I do that make a huge difference to stay in shape and look good on the red carpets.

Festival Tips & Tricks

I am going to let you in on a few of my tips and tricks that might just come in handy when events and holiday season roll around. For example, when at TIFF in Toronto, I was waiting for my cab outside the Fairmont Royal York, so I grabbed a green juice to fuel up for the day ahead on my way to a screening at the Prince of Wales Theatre for Spotlight. I grabbed a fresh tossed salad at the TIFF Lightbox before heading into hair and makeup. Then it was off to The Martian red carpet at Roy Thomson Hall. A different day I was able to stop into the NKPR gifting suite which had a ton of ways to support my health, especially Saje Natural Wellness immune boosting products. I always bring some Vega Protein Bars with me in my purse. My favourite is the Chocolate Peanut Butter and it really takes the edge off if I will be having a later dinner after work.

Finding a little time for a quick workout of some kind definitely has its rewards and really makes a difference. Some cardio or some toning not only de-stresses but keeps the body functioning and looking good. Just like my car, regular maintenance goes a long way! I like to fit in a quick run or time on the bike and if I have extra time I love to take in a good yoga class. There are so many to choose from in whichever city I happen to be in.

I have to admit that one of the biggies for me is avoiding the carbs. When out at events I always grab an apple if they are served or I go for the protein or veggie options if possible since they are the better choices. Also since I like to work out in the morning before my hectic days begin, I find my ClassPass membership is worth its weight in gold. I can use it whenever I travel, especially to festivals in Toronto, Vancouver or even Whistler. In just one membership you can try yoga, boxing, crossfit or barre. I love the fact that you can set your own schedule, which comes in handy when I am on the run.

In addition, one of my best ways to stay healthy on the run is with Fitness Foods. They have been a lifesaver for me, especially when I have had super busy weeks. Fitness Foods will deliver healthy options every Sunday right to my door and I can plan for the week ahead with lots of healthy food on hand to just grab and go. So convenient and well worth the cost!  I would highly recommend the service since eating right is the key to good health.

As my Grandmother always said, “You have to nourish the body!” and it is so true.
