What strikes me first about the salon, is how quickly you feel at ease. The staff is relaxed, friendly and accommodating. The space has a fresh and funky vibe and offers a private sanctuary away from the bustling streets below. I had the chance to sit down with Beautiques owner Joanna Keller and ask her about some of the biggest trends in the industry right now, the rise of the YouTube makeup artist and how the everyday woman can keep up with the ever-rising beauty bar.

What are the biggest makeup trends this season?

For Spring/Summer 2017 I have been seeing a lot of natural looks coming down the catwalk. Full brows, clean and dewy skin, light eye with prominent lashes and neutral lips for every day (almost a “no makeup “makeup). Also, a statement lip is a popular thing to add to this look, a very bright color or super dark for an edgy or night look is popular. Right now, any color can go on your lips, so have fun – yellow, navy, neon orange or purple, literally anything goes! It’s most important to feel comfortable with your look because not everyone is down to rock a black lip just because it’s in style -there is always a way to customize or make any look more wearable for every day, this is something we can help with.

How have attitudes changed towards make-up since you have been in the industry?

The industry has changed a ton since I started. Now, with the introduction of cosmetic tattooing and lash extensions, we are finally catering to the busy and professional woman of today. Women are always expected to look beautiful and presentable, even if they little time to get ready or take care of themselves. Things like Botox, fillers and laser procedures are also extremely popular now, the face of 2017 is a slightly more “fake” in a sense, but we can create this look by contouring with makeup. Unfortunately, this contour trend isn’t the easiest to execute without training. Booking a makeup artist to do advanced looks for your special occasion or photos is probably your best bet. You can also book in for a make-up lesson to get some coaching on how to perfect this look on your own.

What is the most common mistake people are making when adding makeup to their look?

A common mistake that a lot of women make with putting their look together is not making it balanced and cohesive. I have a background in fashion styling, so I really love putting the full look together, that is my true passion. Makeup and hair should accent and complement the overall look, not compete with it. Unfortunately, the “less is more” rule is often broken. Choosing one feature to accentuate on the face is a great way to keeping your makeup look classy. Make-up should look like you are wearing it, not like it is wearing you.

Do you have any tips for low-maintenance makeup?

The best tips I would have for the low maintenance girl would be first to take care of your skin as best as possible. If you’re going to spend time and money on products its best to target your skin as this can save you from putting on foundations and face makeup daily, It will also help you to look youthful down the road. Secondly, take advantage of things like eyelash extensions. I can’t stress how important these are; lashes are the one thing that suits everyone and enhances all beauty, no matter what your style, face-shape or colouring may be. Also, consider cosmetic tattoo’s these services will have you looking flawless and naturally beautiful from the time you wake up to when you wake up with zero time in the morning.
