Patrick Ta is living every aspiring Instagram makeup artist’s dream. When the self-taught Arizona native was spotted on social media by Canadian actress and model Shay Mitchell, he went from being a relative unknown to one of North America’s most sought-after makeup artists. His client list now includes celebrities like Gigi Hadid, the Kardashian/Jenner family, and Chrissy Teigan. We were thrilled when Ta recently took some time out of his hectic schedule (skipping Victoria’s Secret casting) to head up to Vancouver to sit down with BLUSH and share some of his top tips for the season.
Sitting down with Ta, it is easy to see why he is in such high demand. Not only is he incredibly talented, as a quick scroll through his Instagram feed will clearly show, he is delightfully affable, with an easy and genuine energy.
Ta was in town to promote KISS New York Professional’s stunning new makeup collection and gave us the inside scoop on some of the exciting new products that they have in store for us this Fall. KISS New York Professional is a K-beauty inspired cosmetic line that they claim is comparable in quality to prestigious brands, but produced at price point that allows everyone to ‘Be Your Own Pro.’
We started off by asking about the key looks and colours to reach for this season. His response: Keep It Simple.
“I feel like right now if I was to pick a little kit for the easy everyday look, you just have your bronze palette, you can even use that as an eyeshadow, a little nude lip, and a brow, and then you can add in just a lip when you want to change your lip from day to night and you want to elevate your look. Keep the eye bare, just let the lip be the focal point.”
Using bronzer for your eye?! We love this idea of multi-purpose cosmetics. Ta explained further, “Most of the makeup I do, I will use the contour or bronzer in the crease.” He went on to suggest that not only is this a great way to cut down on your kit, it also creates a contiguous look.
Highlighting is a real challenge for many, but as Ta says, “a look is never finished without highlighter.” He gave us some awesome tips on how to create the perfect dewy glow using KISS Halo Strobing Palette.
“I typically like to use powder highlighters because the application is easier. I apply with a fan brush, and I always like to mist so it allows the powder to melt onto the skin and it creates that natural dewy look.”
Lastly, we talk matte lipstick, a trend that is going nowhere soon. Ta realizes that for many of his clients, wear-off can be a tricky issue, and he is not always there for touch ups. He recommends using KISS Celeste Matte Liquid Lipstick, which goes on as a liquid and dries matte, and then to top it with a gloss to protect against the wear of the day.
KISS hit the ball out of the park with this collection, and Ta was visibly blown away by this drug store-priced product. With its endurance and strong pigments, it looks like KISS is showing the established beauty brands that you can have all of the lustre and high-end looks for less.
