Last December, Canadian footwear brand, Native Shoes opened the doors to its first ever retail location in Vancouver’s historic Gastown neighbourhood. The opening of the concept store marked a major milestone for Native Shoes, the homegrown Vancouver-based company that has created a global name for their forward thinking, ultra-lightweight and ‘Beast Free’ footwear for men, women and children.
We were excited to check out the new space and see just where the brand has come since it launched in 2009, with its three classic shoe silhouettes constructed entirely from EVA.
The store design offers a high end, minimalistic yet sustainable space, the design inspiration draws from Native Shoes’ west coast roots, pulling in natural wood for fixturing and a monolithic moss wall sourced from the forests surrounding Vancouver. The store design fosters an interactive atmosphere making it accessible for both adults and kids alike. Products offered in-store include Native Shoes’ core product line of footwear in new prints and colours for the Fall season, as well as recent launches like the water-resistant Treklite boot collection and Monaco Velcro for kids.
“We’re extremely proud to open our first retail location in our hometown Vancouver,” says Kyle Housman, President at Native Shoes. “This new space will be a creative hub where design, fashion and community intersect.”
For a pint-sized perspective, we asked our junior writer Bracken what she thinks of the new store, and how she connects with the brand that says it “exists to create happiness and enlighten lives.”
Bracken says “The store has a great atmosphere. The colourful shoes really stand out in the mostly white and light wood store. I have owned a pair of Natives since I was a little kid, and they have been my main summer shoe for hitting the beaches and rivers since then. I love the new Native designs – they are so cool. It feels like Native shoes have grown with me, as I go from being a kid to a teen.”
