This week, the Manitoba Métis Federation presented Vancouver Designer Evan Ducharme and his latest collection, ORIGIN.
Inspired by his own cultural heritage, childhood memories and experiences within the Métis community, this collection looked to not only honour tradition but expand on the ideas of Métis garments and design.
ORIGIN marked Ducharme’s fifth season showing in Vancouver and was launched in the intimate setting of Space in East Vancouver. Ducharme, who is known for his sleek silhouettes, modern stylization and monochromatic palette, stepped out of the box for this collection.
Ducharme took elements from traditional garments such as the jacket of the Coureur de Bois and the iconic Métis sash (Ceinture fléchée), the latter informing the colour palette for the collection, with the hues deepened to natural tones of oxblood, navy, moss, camel and black.
ORIGIN is perhaps Ducharme’s most diverse collection to date, showing once again his ability to combine creativity with function and attention to detail. Most surprising for fans of Ducharme’s would be his uncharacteristic foray into using colour and accessories. Collaborating with Ducharme this season is local millinery studio Hive Mind Millinery, who created custom beanies, felt hats and veils to compliment some of the looks. La Biosthétique Canada’s hair and make-up experts came in as the show’s beauty partners and designed individual looks for each model that perfectly enhanced their unique indigenous beauty.
Whilst the collection did successfully pull in many design elements from Ducharme’s Métis culture, the collection still clearly embodied his classic design aesthetic. We see classic Ducharme with the strong silhouettes and the blurred lines of gender specific garments as well as the beautiful use of texture and sheer fabrics to build tension and create statements.
This collection is a bold new step for Ducharme who has successfully shown he can step outside of his comfort zone without losing his own origins to a new narrative.
