#5For5: Delicious Plantbased Soups

It feels like a soup day. There I said it – the inevitable admittance that Winter is not going anywhere. As you can imagine, it is most likely dark and rainy outside and all you can think about is bowl full of flavourful soup about to warm your whole body. With a side of crunchy toast, chopped veg, soup is versatile and the ideal meal for the new season. Here are my choices for the best plantbased soups in the city to assist in your delicious indulging.

The Soup Solution is a locally owned and operated business in Vancouver by mother of two, Gayle McLeod. Al the homemade, natural ingredient soups come from Serious Soups. The Soup Solution is the only place on the lower mainland where you can purchase these delicious products. The soups are low in sodium and contain no preservatives or MSG. They are the perfect go-to meal for a quick work lunch, to send to school with the kids or a last minute dinner. Try the African Yam & Peanut or the Tuscan White Bean with Spinach and Sundried Tomato for amazing vegan options.

Based on the idea of simplicity, Tractor created a menu of “every day health foods” that are both healthy and flavourful. The menu is made up of fresh salads, sandwiches, stews and of course, soups! The company sources organic and local ingredients as much as possible and prepares food in small batches to ensure high quality and freshness. Currently on the menu are three different plantbased soups: Sweet Potato & Lentil, Butternut Squash and Tomato Fennel. You can find Tractor on West 4th in Kitsilano, on Burrard Street in downtown Vancouver, on Quebec Street in Olympic Village. Soon to Robson Street!

CHAU VeggiExpress is vegetarian eatery serving primarily vegan dishes inspired by the owners’ Vietnamese roots. The menu is based on a fusion of traditional Vietnamese flavours with fresh local produce from Vancouver. There are four different soups on the main menu and trust me, after reading the ingredients you will not know which one to choose. My favourite is the irresistible coconut curry taste of the Golden Temple Soup, but you will have to try them all to decide for yourself.

Tart Borscht is dreamy delicious | IG @taoorganics

This all organic, plantbased and glutenfree restaurant creates a range of delicious, raw vegan meals. Owner, Agathe began the raw vegan diet back in 2003 and watched her arthritis disappear before her eyes. Discovering the benefits of plantbased eating for herself and her family, she decided to share it and open her own place. The three soups on the menu are Borscht, Butternut Squash & Cilantro and the Soupe du Jour. Depending on which of the soups ordered, these wholesome soups are served either hot and cold – double check the menu.

There are so many different flavours and versions of soups to try in the Lower Mainland, sometimes it is hard to decide. I personally love soup as it is a great, quick and easy meal that can either be heated up at home or enjoyed out at your favourite restaurant.
