The heat is on and it looks like Summer is almost in 604, so now is the perfect time to arm yourself with some tricks and products to keep the heat from ruining your makeup.
In Vancouver, our heat is notoriously a humid heat, which is not a pleasant heat. Hair gets frizzy, you sweat just breathing, and the moisture just clings to you like a staticky dress. While these tips will not stop the inevitable, when Summer does arrive, you will be ready and confident with your best face forward.
The key for Summer makeup is to use waterproof makeup options whenever possible. Using waterproof liners and mascara will help keep the raccoon eyes at bay, but there are also waterproof options for brows. All the rage right now is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Dip Brow Pomade which you can see being used to achieve those Instagram eyebrows that are to be popping up everywhere. While you may not want to be as extreme as the ladies sporting this latest look, the product itself will help to ensure your brows do not go for a wander down your face as you sweat. For weddings and bridal parties, this tip is of particular importance, as you do not want to be battling heat-related makeup mishaps on such a big day!
A Strong Base with SPF
A must have for everyone in the Summer heat is a great foundation with SPF, and NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint delivers perfect oil free coverage and contains SPF 30. It is available in a wide range of colours and is easy to use in a squeezable tube format. Using an excellent primer will also help to keep your foundation in place; I recommend primer year round, it just makes your makeup easier to apply and helps to keep it looking fresh and flawless all day.
And of course blush and bronzer are a must, but if at all possible, try using a cream blush. Cream Blush seems intimidating, but it is very easy to use. You can put a little on your fingers and blend it into the apples of your cheeks, but you can also swatch some onto your hand, and use a good clean brush to get the pigment onto your cheeks. Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Stick is a fun way to try out cream blush in an easy to use stick format, and if you find you do not want to use it as a blush, you still have a wonderfully hydrating vegan lip option.
Matte Neutrals are Your Best Friend
Your eyelids will always feel the effects of heat, as your lids are comprised of the thinnest skin on the human body. To keep your shadow from creasing in the heat, my go-to is the NARS Smudgeproof Shadow Base, and yes, it does work in high humidity.
The best eyeshadows you can use in hotter weather are neutral matte shades, as shimmer shadows tend to crease more easily due to the larger particles in these products that give that glittery look. Neutrals work for everyone, are easy to apply and will go with any look. The less pigment you have on your eyes during a hot spell, the better; less is more in this case. Neutral palettes are easy to get your hands on and are simple to use, from Kat Von D’s Shade and Light Eye Contour Palette to Becca’s Ombre Nudes Eye Palette (both available at Sephora) the looks you can create with one palette are almost endless. There are also many options for waterproof liners such as kohl pencil, gel and pen formats, so use the one you are most comfortable with the to complete your eye look.
Set Me Up – Setting Spray – The Final Step
Once you have put your face on, another step that can help to prolong the breakdown of your makeup is to use a setting spray. Using a spray to set makeup is not a new idea; numerous friends of mine admit to having used hairspray to achieve the desired setting effect before a night out.
However, a properly formulated spray that is made for your face and will not potentially cause breakouts and blocked pores is Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray. A great option for this product is that it is sold in a smaller spray bottle format, which can be a bit more affordable if you will not be using it daily, and it is a great size for traveling too. A light misting after your makeup look is complete will help to keep everything in place as you dance the night away.
Hopefully, the warmer weather is here to stay, and these tips will help you stay ahead of the heat no matter what you get up to. Bring on the patio dinners, seawall walks, Queen Elizabeth Park strolls and Robson Street shopping trips, rain or shine, you will be looking your best.
Peace, Love, and Lipstick!
