Face primer is one of those products that many of us did not grow up with. Just the thought of a ‘primer’ makes us wonder is this something they should be spending money on or is this another trendy product created to rid our pocketbooks of our money.
Prior to my becoming a makeup artist, I thought that face primers were just another cash grab for the cosmetics companies. But being introduced to face primer while in school, I actually became a convert and now I cannot do without this product in my professional kit.
Primers are just what the name indicates; a base that goes on after your moisturizer and before your foundation. Primer helps to smooth out imperfections in the skin, such as enlarged pores and helps your foundation last as long as possible while ensuring a seamless application. The key is figuring out what kind of primer you need; anti-aging or oil control? Colour correction or moisturizing?
Here are just a few of the many primers available to fit any skin type or need.
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer
Hourglass Cosmetics was founded in 2004 by Carisa Janes and launched at Barney’s New York that same year. Since then, this award-winning line has been picked up by Sephora, as well as Nordstrom and Net-A-Porter to name a few.
This oil-free formula is the perfect base for all skin types including sensitive skin and it helps to conceal redness as well as minimize pores and fine lines. As it contains SPF, using this particular primer would save you a step in your morning routine as you would not need to apply a separate sunscreen. The pump top format is perfect for easy application and for helping to keep the primer free of bacteria as a pump helps to keep excess air out of creams and lotions which will break down your products more quickly.
Lise Watier Base Miracle Radiance Blurring Effect Primer
Lise Watier was one of the first women to establish herself in the Canadian cosmetics industry, and this year the Mount Royal Quebec based company is celebrating its 45th year in business.
Base Miracle Radiance Blurring Effect Primer is a shimmery gel formula that goes on with a silky smooth finish. The iridescent gold base helps to illuminate the skin for a healthy glow under your foundation, but without being at all overpowering. Pores and fine lines are minimized and it can be worn alone or under your makeup as it has such a nice feel. It also helps to even out skin tone so that your foundation has the perfect set up for your busy day.
Lise retired in 2013 but continues to fundraise for the Lise Watier Foundation, a charity devoted to empowering women, particularly those living in poverty. That same year the foundation partnered with the Canadian Women’s Foundation to further the empowerment of women in Canada. What a wonderful Canadian success and female entrepreneurial story.
Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Face Primer
Charlotte Tilbury is a UK based Makeup Artist who boldly launched her own makeup and skincare line in 2013. Though this line is relatively new to the world of cosmetics, it has quickly become a favourite among celebrities and women in the know worldwide.
Charlotte’s award winning Wonderglow Face Primer is formulated with anti-ageing BioNymph Peptide Complex to help stimulate collagen production in the skin while smoothing out pores and fine lines. This primer has a dewy golden glow and can be worn alone for a casual look or under foundation to give your skin a healthy glow. The squeeze tube format ensures only what you need is dispensed each time while keeping your product fresh and germ-free. If you want more glow, apply some over top of your foundation focusing on your cheek bones for some instant pop. You can see the entire line at the newly opened luxury beauty hall at Holt Renfrew.
Primer is an investment but well worth it, after all, you want your face to be its best all day and night and primer will help you achieve long lasting makeup results. A little goes a long way; you only need about a pea-sized amount to even out the skin. You can apply your primer with a good synthetic foundation brush or use clean fingertips to work it gently into the skin. You can even use a primer to smooth your décolletage area if you find you have some fine lines appearing. Using a tinted primer can leave a little bronze shimmer which is always nice for a night out.
