One of my favourite destinations in Vancouver is Main Street. With so much to do, see, eat and drink it is a great way to pass a Saturday or anytime. Paired with easy walkability and transit options, it makes it the perfect destination for a day to play tourist in your own town.
What makes this one of the city’s favourite areas is that it has so much to offer and something for everyone. It feels more relaxed than Downtown, and allows everyone to explore everything from record stores to thrift shops.
Once you are all fueled up, head to Welk’s General Store; it is a cruelty-free shopper’s paradise.
If you are looking to make the switch to healthier and more ethical choices in your household and personal care items, look no further – Welk’s has it all and then some. Welk’s has so many amazing products in one place hosted by friendly staff and surrounded by happy and conscious shoppers. Among the many goodies I always pick up at Welk’s is the Magnolia and Lily laundry detergent by Ecos that is not only hypoallergenic and vegan but also contains a softener.
In the same aisle, you will find Caldrea. Welk’s carries the Caldrea hand soap, kitchen countertop spray, dryer sheets, laundry soap and dish soap. You will cherish this line as the scents are gorgeous, and the packaging is visually appealing so they look great in any décor. Refills are available for many of their products which are always a big bonus. Welk’s also carries the Method (great countertops spray) and Common Good lines which are also both refillable and cruelty-free.
Welk’s extensive personal care and makeup aisle is almost overwhelming. There are so many fantastic lines in the aisle you could almost spend all day trying to decide what to buy. Vancouver-based United and Free’s entire line of body and hair care is available here. If you need toothpaste, try Nature’s Gate or Tom’s of Maine; both are great and are available here. Tom’s of Maine uses sustainable practices and donates 10% of their profits each year to community nonprofits focused on environmental and humanitarian projects; what a great reason to smile. Do not forget to pick up a Schmidt’s award-winning aluminum and paraben free deodorant in a jar or stick in one of their signature vegan scents like Bergamot Lime.
Another line available here is Pacifica. If you need makeup, soap, perfume or that perfect gift, this is the line for you. Cruelty-free, vegan and woman owned it is visually a beautiful line of makeup, soap, perfume, gift wares, personal care items, and lovely candles that will brighten anyone’s day. Before you go, pick up beautiful cards, wrap, a lush houseplant and maybe that hardware gadget you keep forgetting to grab; Welk’s makes it easy!
Make your next stop all about sustainable and local fashion – Smoking Lily. Their first shop opened in my hometown of Victoria, BC in 1996 and added a second location on Main Street in 2002. Everything is made locally by the dedicated women behind the scenes in the Victoria studio using as many BC and Canadian sourced materials as possible. Their silk screening in done using nontoxic inks and their entire children’s line and accessories are both created using scraps of cloth from their larger projects.
Their clothes are so comfortable, flattering and fun; I love my Le Petite Anglaise skirt complete with a cheeky skull and crossbones screen print; a nod to my 90’s happy place “punk’s not dead, it’s just standing at the back.” But they also have an excellent assortment of cute cardigans, t-shirts, and dresses; I even got a Greyhound print dress here.
If you see an item you like, but it does not have the screen printed image that you want, just ask. They will do a custom image for you onto any item you want, and it does not take that long; could be a perfect gift idea for that hard to shop for person.
