BC boasts some of the best fruits and vegetables in the world. Yet many of us shopping at our local supermarket don’t even know if our peaches are from Kelowna or California!
The beauty of summer in the city is that you don’t have to drive out to the Interior to taste BC’s best offerings; they’re already right here on your doorstep thanks to the Vancouver farmers’ markets.
The proximity of these markets means that Vancouverites can easily fit them into their busy and city-centric lives. We took a tour through some of Vancouver’s tastiest farmers markets, and what better way to do it than in one of Canada’s most versatile cars: the Toyota Sienna.
Mount Pleasant Market
If your family is always on the go, drive over to Vancouver’s quirky and eclectic neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant for a morning of fresh air and delicious artisan delights.
Feeding an active family is always a challenge. Trying to grab the groceries between homework, sports practice, and the many other commitments you share as a family can often feel like a military operation — taking the kids along for the ride can feel like all-out war.
The Mount Pleasant Farmers’ Market is a parent’s dream come true. This easy-going Sunday market is located on the east side of Dude Chilling Park and is a gathering place for a diverse crowd of young families, artists, dog owners, and quirky neighbourhood personalities. The Market and its vendors often run cool activities for the kids, so instead of dragging them there, the kids will be begging to go. Whether you’re en route to hockey practice or having the whole ballet class over for lunch, you can fit the whole crowd (and all the necessary cargo and produce) in the Toyota Sienna with ease.
Mount Pleasant Market runs every Sunday, 10am-2pm from May 28 to Oct 8 at 8th Ave. & Guelph St. in Dude Chilling Park.
Kitsilano Farmers Market
Health-conscious couples should nip over to Kitsilano, a neighbourhood where residents are focused on keeping healthy and managing work-life balance.
Vancouverites are known for loving the great outdoors, especially in the summer months with the ocean on our doorstep and incredible forest and mountain hikes just up the road. Cruise into the Kitsilano farmers market and check out some of the amazing local artisans. Grab a cold-pressed juice and ooey gooey baked treats for a to-go lunch to get you up the Chief or the Sea to Sky Gondola. The Sienna’s transforming interior and 39.1 cu.ft. cargo capacity means there is plenty of space for hiking and picnic gear, plus all your purchases. And the Sienna’s power steering will help manoeuvre winding roads in safety. It’s the only minivan on the market that can come equipped with all-wheel drive, and its 3.5L V6 engine lays down an impressive 296hp and 263 lb-ft of torque— more than enough to hold its own in the fast lane on the Sea-to-Sky.
Kitsilano Farmers Market runs every Sunday, 10am-2pm from May 7 to Oct 22 at 10th Ave. & Larch St.
Downtown Farmers Market
Head to the heart of downtown Vancouver, where people enjoy the vibe of the bustling, busy streets of this lively part of town.
If you’re stuck in the city, farmers’ markets on the outskirts of the city might seem ill-suited to your busy lifestyle. However, the Downtown Farmers Market brings all the goodness of the countryside to the heart of the city. Parking is a breeze in those tight downtown spaces as the Sienna’s outward vision is excellent, and the rear-view camera offers a 180-degree view. Make it your mission to procure a spectacular array of local produce for an afternoon party on the patio.
Downtown Farmers Market runs every Thursday 11am-3pm from Jun 1, 2017 to Oct 5, 2017, at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre.
With the Sienna, there are no worries about squeezing everyone in, as it is one of the roomiest minivans available today; the Sienna LE, XLE and SE models comfortably fit up to eight adults. And with an 8-speed automatic transmission, even those in the back row can enjoy a smooth ride.
Whatever your lifestyle is, the Toyota Sienna makes even the toughest schedules manageable and city living even more enjoyable.
