Kaleena Morrison is the compassionate co-founder of a plantbased beauty line (that we love!) United & Free. Kaleena and her brother started United & Free with the vision of creating a skin and hair care line that is plantbased, sustainable, and gender neutral. They wanted to create a business that would cause disruption and unapologetically challenge the norms of the beauty industry, and they did.
What has been your most satisfying moment in life?
The most satisfying moment of my life has been the moment I brought a healthy baby girl into the world. The moment I found out I was pregnant my life completely changed for the better. The anticipation of waiting 9 months to meet this special person was almost too much at times. Meeting my daughter, Jade was the best day of my life. Sometimes the most unexpected things are the most wonderful.
What motivates you to make change?
I’ve always held the belief that no one will make change for you, you have to be your own catalyst. We all have different ideals on how we perceive the world; different ideas on how we can make our community better or how we decide to live. These ideas, these thoughts, make us who we are. There’s so much power in taking a thought and allowing it to be at the fore front of your mind, to really chase it and to have it motivate you. That makes change. Let the idea push you into a direction that will allow you to be the change you want to see in the world.
How do you generate new business ideas?
I’ve been fortunate enough that I have a really creative mind and ideas, tangible or not, always come to me. I feel continuous education is the most important aid to help with personal growth. You should never stop trying to learn or teach yourself new things. I think new ideas are best when they are formed organically and come from a place of wonder and inspiration. Travelling and learning from different cultures has always lead to great inspirations for me personally. In today’s world I think you have to stay on top of tech. If you have a firm grasp on technology you can showcase your ideas and views to an endless amount of people, anywhere in the world. That amazes me. Anything tech based should be learned from the experts. For example, I’m taking an amazing Digital Marketing course at BrainStation Vancouver which will help me grown my business in new markets around the world.
Who has been your greatest inspiration?
I have two great inspirations, my mom and my dad. I have never met two people who have struggled with such adversity, experienced racism, major health problems and still persevered and succeeded. They are kind, helpful and community driven people who have always wanted to make change, and sought justice where it was do. They never backed down, not ever. My father is an entrepreneur and taught me the hands on experience of running a business. I’ve seen first-hand the ups and downs of becoming your own boss. I’ve learned to always push forward and follow your heart, because your heart will lead you to your dreams.
What advice do you have for other women looking to take a big step in their lives?
If it’s your passion then go for it! You can’t fake your passion! People will see that love shine through. I also recommend getting help. Go to networking events and get to know like-minded people. Having people around you in the same mind set will help push you further than you can imagine and keep you motivated. Get a great mentor and seek out organizations that align with your passion. There are a lot of organizations that offer support, education and funding. I would not be where I am without the guidance of others.
What does the future hold for Kaleena?
“This spring a group of us will be taking a trip to a cacao farm in Mexico to visit friends, and bring back some Mayan history on the ancient chocolate. Cocao is great for our skin and even better to eat! I’m also helping my father rebrand his ice cream business this year. He hopes to sell the first all vegan line of ice cream products on the East Coast of Canada!”
